Wednesday's Verse - Best to Shun the Mermaid's Tail

This week’s verse moves from  a science fiction verse about grollups to a fantasy verse about mermaids. It is taken from 366 Days of Poetry, a collection of mixed-genre poetry released in 2016.

Best to Shun the Mermaid's Tail

Far below where the tall ships sail,

in the mermaid deep where the fish don’t sleep,

beware the hungry souls that wail.

If you see a mermaid’s tail,

if you that wonder seek to keep,

far below where the tall ships sail.

Condemned, will all your efforts fail,

and no profit will you reap,

beware the hungry souls that wail.

Do not seek the mermaid’s tail.

Do not seek the treasures deep,

far below where the tall ships sail.

If you do your soul will ail

at each tidal ebb and neap.

Beware the hungry souls that wail.

Better to leave both sea and sail,

better no sea treasures keep

from far below where the tall ships sail.

Beware the hungry souls that wail.
