Seeking Safety
Written on February 15, 2015, as the March 22 entry of 366 Days of Flash Fiction, this piece is about seeking refuge.
They walked tall, heads against the clouds, a proud folk, but humble; they knew how fragile life was, how tenuous their grasp on survival. I watched them traverse the ridge, silhouetted like targets at a shooting gallery, and my trigger finger twitched.
I was not hunting them, today. Today, I sought refuge, a starship to the skies. The plethorii were among the few who could aid me. Keepers of secrets, they were hunters of the five suns, stalkers of…
…stalkers.
I bowed my head. The crackle of a deliberate misstep, and the gentle nudge of the barrel of an Amschauss 76 against my cheek came as a relief.
“Refuge.” It came out harsher than I’d intended, more desperate. “I seek refuge.”
And the Amschauss’s barrel was replaced by an extended hand.
