By the Light of a Thousand Ghosts
“Grandpa, what makes the lights work?”
Stanislau looked down at his granddaughter, and then up at the lights entwined around the tree. The streets were lined with such trees, all lit up in delicate traceries of white and green, red and blue, but not a single string of lights was hooked up to the community’s generator. They did not have the power for such things.
“Every light is powered by a thousand ghosts,” Stanislau said.
“What ghosts?” Kara asked, her eyes wide.
Stanislau looked around the dining room, his faded blue eyes taking in the other residents of what used to be one of Canberra’s favorite city centre pubs. Around them, conversation paused, and the old man knew his audience would be broader than his granddaughter’s youthful ears.
