May I Write a Novel Challenge Progress Check – May 01-07, 2025

It’s May 16, for those of us on the east coast of the O.Z. and this is my mid-day break and I’m looking back and celebrating the May milestones I’ve already hit for this challenge. To be fair, my private goal was 4k/day, so, knowing Life has been kicking my backside lately, I halved it to 2k/day. This is how the first seven days of the challenge went.

 

May 1

Started the challenge with a bang, and did 50% more than needed. Happy with that. Hit the 1k word milestone, and surpassed it.

Day Total: 3,188; Month Total: 3,188



 

May 2

Not so good for words. Edited a novel, celebrated an acceptance, and updated my Royal Road and YouTube.

Day Total: 122; Month Total: 3,310

 

May 3

Short on word quota, but made a submission, and focused on getting my YouTube up to date…again.

Day Total: 1,224, Month Total: 4,534

May 4

Do not ask me what happened. I am working through a bit of depression and chose today to focus on researching a game…or hiding in one; take your pick.

Day Total: 215; Month Total: 4,749


 

May 5

Today was a day for publishing, marketing, and keeping both YouTube channels on track…but it was also a day where I worked in some words, and hit the day’s quota…and the 5k milestone.

Day Total: 2,063; Month Total: 6,812


May 6

Not so many words produced, but a large chunk edited…followed by a large chunk of video editing.

Day Total: 3; Month Total: 6,815

 

 

May 7

Today the focus was again on keeping the YouTube channels up to date, and also finalizing the format for another short story prior to upload.

Day Total: 533; Month Total: 7,348

Free Read: Forest Connections

Today, I managed to settle down and write a response to the latest flash fiction challenge on Chuck Wendig's Terribleminds blog - The Dead Body . There were only two rules: the word limit was 1,000, and the story had to open with a dead body. This is what came out: Forest Connections The body swayed in the trees rocked by storm winds and illuminated by lightning. It was naked, except for the green, leather gloves it wore on both hands—the hands from which it was suspended from the tree. It might have been an attractive body, if there hadn’t been a gaping wound where its stomach should be. Perhaps… but Garamond wasn’t looking at the body, didn’t notice the slender hips or sculpted chest, the beauty of fine-chiselled cheek bones or luxurious fall of hair. Garamond fought his breakfast back into place, swallowed bile, forced his focus to the other trees in the grove, the ground onto which he’d nearly stepped. Australian Spiders: A Large White Tail came to Visit

This is a whitetail spider. If you look very closely, you can see a faint white marking near the end of her abdomen that gives it the name. The sun glare is from the bathroom, she later headed into. That, as well as the long, almost cylindrical body and distinctive layout of the head and legs is a giveaway. As you can see, they are climbing spiders.      They also have a nasty habit of dropping onto things that pass below them - and biting them. They are quite poisonous. This one measured around 2.5-3 cm (approximately an inch) long and about 0.5 cm (or around 1/4-1/5 of an inch) across, which makes it probably female, and most definitely the biggest of these spiders I've seen in an urban environment.
