Just Released - Screams for the Dying

From dark-ish paramilitary science fiction to dark-ish science-fantasy, and from agents working for the trans-galactic good to a magical being who lives a life of retrieval and protection, the second short story for January explores what the mythic banshee might become if they existed...and lived in a distant future.

What's it About?

Not every impending death makes a banshee scream—even when we know they’re coming. We are not just doom heralds, but protectors, and we serve the greater good. We are the ones sent when no-one else can make it, and even we are sometimes a step too late. Is this mission one fated to end in disaster, instead of joy?

How Does It Start?

I had lived here from childhood to my thirtieth year but, in spite of the wattle dancing on the breeze and the eucalyptus-scented air that brushed across my skin, I knew I no longer belonged. My nostrils remembered the faint fizz of kelfa blossoms from the sun-drenched planet of Bolan, and my eyes recalled the darkness of subterranean living on the asteroid of Quorbet.

Now, as I stood, again, beneath the gold-flecked grey of the acacia and stared at the red earth of my home, I felt my homecoming a farce and found myself cursing the accurate wisdom of another older than myself.

I had doubted her when she said that few who had wandered as long as I had, could retain the links to the lands of our birth. It had been the truth.

Today, I managed to settle down and write a response to the latest flash fiction challenge on Chuck Wendig's Terribleminds blog - The Dead Body . There were only two rules: the word limit was 1,000, and the story had to open with a dead body. This is what came out: Forest Connections The body swayed in the trees rocked by storm winds and illuminated by lightning. Writing Craft: Using Tradition to Give Depth to Your World

It’s Australia Day, today, and that, coming so soon after Christmas got me to thinking about what significance this sort of even might have for world building. After all, every society celebrates or commemorates something, whether those events centre around a religious festival, an event rooted in history that helps define national identity, a culturally significant day, or a personal event. Each and every one of these helps to give a society structure, and to build individual identity. They are often used to cement a society of individuals into a cohesive whole, and as such are an essential part of social fabric.
