Excerpt: In which Rohim and Adelle try to have an adult conversation...despite their eavesdroppers:

“We’ll be leaving you at the Laska-Gate, then,” Damsel told him. “Got a fragile cargo with a use-by date that needs to be somewhere while it’s still edible.”

Lewis’s ears twitched. As a statement designed for misinterpretation, that wasn’t bad. Of course, the fact the Damsel probably did have some kind of delicate fruit on board made it almost funny.

At least he hoped they did. he racked his brains, trying to remember what kinds of exports they might have picked up from Axis Fifty-Eight, but his research hadn’t gone that far. There just hadn’t been time.

“Scan,” Tomas warned.

“Who was it this time?” Rohim’s demand echoed Lewis’s curiosity exactly.

Limelight, sir.”

So much for them not being in the system, Lewis thought. Coincidence, my furry little ass.

“We being scanned?” Captain Phelan made it sound like she didn’t know—and somehow Lewis sincerely doubted it.

“Had some ships jump in-system,” Rohim told her. “The curious type, it seems. I don’t think I’ve been scanned this much since my last medical.”

“Wonder what they’re looking for.”

“Beats me,” Rohim told her. “It’s not like there’s actually anything out here.”

The shrug was evident in the captain’s voice when she replied, “Like you said, ‘the curious type.’”

Rohim cleared his throat, sounding a little self-conscious as he changed the subject. “So…Adele, when do you think…”

Two young voices rose in another “oooOOooo”, and the captain chuckled.

“You asking me on a date, Ro…or was it a business rendezvous?”

“Dinner?” Rohim answered, just as Angelie shouted, “Date!”

Lewis could only imagine the look Rohim cast the child.

“I’ll send you the Damsel’s schedule,” the captain told him. “Maybe once you’ve dropped the children…”

“We are not children,” Angelie protested.

“…where they need to be,” Adele continued, “you’ll have some free sailing time. I won’t be swinging that far in for another ten days or so.”

“I can meet you half way,” Rohim coaxed, and one of the girl’s made gagging sounds.

The statement was followed by the angry clatter of dishes.

“That’s it!” Giselle exclaimed. “I do not have to listen to this.”

“And I’d really prefer if you didn’t,” Adele purred. “This is a private arrangement I’m making with your Uncle.”

“I bet that’s not all you’re making…” Angelie muttered, and Lewis heard two sets of footsteps moving toward the girls’ cabin.

Neither of the adults in the room said a word until after Lewis heard the door snap closed.

“Well, that was awkward,” Rohim told the captain, and she chuckled.

“They’re what…twelve? They’ll get over it.”

“Is that a promise?”

And Adele laughed again. “No. Sixteen is worse.”

“Oh, god…”
