Excerpt: In which Oliver and Angelie have a battle of wills:

Oliver and Lewis exchanged glances and came a little bit closer. It wasn’t hard to act like they thought he was going to change his mind…or like what they were doing was going to get them into a lot of trouble.

After another cautious glance at Rohim, they moved forward. This time they split up, Oliver circling around behind the table so he could sit beside Angelie, while Lewis slunk over to Giselle and set his chin on her thigh.

“Ssshhh,” she told him, sneaking a bit of bacon off her plate and sliding it under his nose.

“And then there’s that,” Rohim grumbled. “You’re supposed to be eating that, not them.”

“Aww, Uncle Rohim….”

“Don’t you ‘aww, Uncle Rohim,’ me, young lady. I’m doing you a favor by letting them up here and this is how you repay me?”

“We’re saying goodbye,” Angelie told him. “They’re going to miss us when we’re not here.”

“And your point?” Rohim asked. “They’re dogs. They’ll get over it…provided there’s enough bacon involved.”

“I don’t think so, Unca,” Angelie argued. “Everything I’ve read says wolves are really smart…and these two are a lot like wolves. Did you know what they were when you bought them?”

Rohim shook his head. “I just asked for something big, cute and furry that would make a good companion animal as well as a guard dog.”

“And they sent you these?” Angelie sounded like she couldn’t believe he’d been so stupid.

“What? You don’t like them?” he asked, and both girls dropped their hands to their dogs’ heads.

“No, we love them,” Angelie told him, “but how did you know you were getting anything worth keeping?”

“Because they know who I am and what I can do?” Rohim suggested. “I’m not entirely stupid.”

Lewis looked up at Giselle and almost laughed out loud. The look on the girl’s face said that was a judgement he wasn’t qualified to make. She passed him another bit of bacon and he contented himself with eating it, instead.
