  The Nightly Battle

Written on July 20, 2015, for the April 1 entry of 366 Days of Poetry, this fantasy poem is about fighting monsters from the dark.

In the city, in the night,

we hear them,

the quiet sounds, the secret sounds,

the sly.

In the evening, in the dark,

we smell them,

the sewer stench, the offal scent,

the sickening spark.

In the caverns, deep and old,

they wait for us,

predators who feel the sun,

no souls.

In the battle joined, we are,

to the death.

To the end of all that’s pure,

we fight.
