Salutations Ahead of Time

 

Written on May 18, 2017, for Another 365 Days of Poetry, this piece is a contemplation of zombies, plagues, viruses, hope, and the importance of remembering.

  

When the plagues came,

we sent them to find a cure.

 

Those of us who are about to die,

we salute you.

 

Below the ground, alone,

they failed, they died.

 

Those of us who are about to rise,

we salute you.

 

They returned, infected by what they’d sought to cure,

hungry

 

Those of you who are about to die,

we salute you.

 

Immunities arose in time.

 

Those of you in a world recovering from a long-forgotten war,

who still remember why.

 

We salute you.
