Aylin’s smile grew wider.

“You have nothing to fear.”

Belle gulped. “Because I’m off-world?”

That brought an abrupt shake of the head. “Because the gerakkin pay their debts. They owe you many times over.”

Belle’s eyes widened. “I didn’t do much,” she whispered.

“You tipped the balance from failure to success on more than one occasion,” Aylin told her.

“And you know this, how?” Belle asked.

“Because the gerakkin colony is supported by Ank’Regar’s father,” Aylin answered simply, “…although now I’ve told you that, you’d best hope your mate helps me succeed in finding and neutralizing the threat to Ank’s father.”

Belle arched her eyebrows. “And why is that?”

“Because I’ll have to kill you, otherwise,” the girl stated.

Oliver rumbled out a warning growl, but he still didn’t shift from the floor. Aylin cocked her head, and turned back to the kitchenette.

“I’m going to need something more than just synth steak,” she informed the ship.

“We make seafall in eight standard hours,” the ship replied. “I am assuming a piscine supplement will suffice.”

“We are not cats,” Oliver protested, and Aylin giggled.

“Govra fillets,” she informed the HMT. “They’re higher in protein and iron than steaks…and contain some beneficial extras.”

“What, fish oil for shiny coats?” Belle suggested.

“That, too,” Aylin confirmed, “although I was thinking of a certain complex substance that sped healing and increased cognitive function, if only for the short term.”

“What are you trying to say?” Oliver demanded, and Aylin nudged Lewis’s comatose form.

“That your beta needs something more than just meat and vitamins from a can.”

“Hmph.” Oliver pushed from slumping to sitting. “Gonna take more than fish to manage that.
