The Coffee Cinquain

Written on July 22, 2015, for the April 9 entry of 366 Days of Poetry, this series of cinquains forms a crown cinquain, and was inspired by the smell of coffee coming from the coffee shop near my lecture theatre at university.

Coffee:

life brew, brown stew,

heart starter of the morn,

carries us through troubles by day,

keeps us

awake

right through to dawn.

Sugared by some, or by

others sweetened, with milk or no,

coffee

in all

of a dozen

languages heated, in

pot, coffee-maker, microwaved

to hot,

this brew

from the jungles

of oft-distant countries

is addictive as Hell, drunk strong

to please.
