The Royal Welcome

Written on August 3, 2015, for the April 14 entry of 366 Days of Poetry, this series of reverse cinquains was inspired by seeing the frost-touched trees on an early morning. I do not know where the fairies came from.

Sun touched,

tree-lined hills rise,

lifting their frost-touched leaves.

Beneath their boughs, aching with cold,

we wait.

Fairies

form the brightly-colored vanguard.

Elves form up to honor,

unicorns stand,

alert.

We wait,

hushed to silence,

so we don’t miss the first

sweet ring of trumpets. Winter’s queen

cometh.
