Oliver wasn’t sure how it worked when the new wolf had already had a relationship with the wolves around him. He’d never had a changeling in that position before.

All the ones he’d shepherded on Amshevra had been colonists foolish enough to believe a company that had lied to them about the planet’s availability…and then stupid enough to take up arms against the rightful inhabitants when they did work it out. Ammie’s people, who’d hated wolves, before encountering the lupar, and who hadn’t been willing to listen to reason.

“Two days at Doc Nielsen’s, another one while I got us out of Lunar One…”

“You what?” Lewis was horrified, but his gaze strayed to the pod and Oliver saw him put the pieces together.

“I bit you,” Oliver told him, “…without your permission.”

“Which I wouldn’t have given,” Lewis finished for him, and his eyes blazed.

Oliver heard his body start to shift, and watched as Lewis gritted his teeth and retained his human form.

That,” he told his friend, “was impressive.”

Lewis scowled at him. “I don’t want to hear how good a wolf I am,” he snarled. “You had no right.”

“You’d rather have died?”
