The Dragon Shines
Written on January 1, 2019, for the March 31 entry of Another 365 Days of Poetry, this piece of blank versed fantasy proved tricky. I’d been trying to avoid dragons as a theme, but couldn’t help it; I love the subject. Blank verse, on the other hand is difficult for me, because I like to rhyme. This is my first blank verse for a while.
Scales a-gleaming, the dragon shines.
Beneath the full moon, silver-dipped,
it flies, seeking prey in lands below.
First to feed, and then to feast, it hunts
and from thence ‘t’will search for other prey,
the thieves whom from its hoard did steal,
seeking wealth without the need to work,
despite the dangers of journey long
and the guardian whom at its end did wait.
They danced with joy at the great beast’s absence,
moved swift to take what caught their eyes,
forgot their scent would long after linger
and lead the fury in their wake.
The dragon flies, a shining vengeance,
to retrieve its lost gold from the thieves,
and when it rises from their camp site,
still it shines, dipped in silver, as its great roar shakes
and echoes from the hills and forests,
a living statue, dread in legend,
victorious it returns, its hoard retrieved.
