Fleeing the Eaters
Written on May 3, 2017, for Another 365 Days of Poetry, this is my second attempt at a Tyburn poem—and it is, of course, a variation. Most Tyburns have four lines of two syllables, and two of nine syllables. The second last line repeats the words from the first two lines, as syllables five through eight, and the last line repeats the words from the second two lines, as syllables five through eight. Both final lines rhymes with each other. My first attempt uses two lines of four syllables, followed by two lines of nine, and then goes on to create a second verse which has four lines, alternating one and three syllables, using a rhyming base that alternates with an –ing word using that base. The final two lines follow the same pattern as the original. This one ended up having a zombie theme, as well.
Masticating.
Castigating.
We flee from the masticating teeth.
Nothing stops the castigating grief.
Late.
Negating.
States
debating.
The vaccine’s too late negating pain.
There’s no longer states debating blame.
