Self-sown Apocalypse

Written on January 9, 2019, for the May 2 entry of Another 365 Days of Poetry, this post-apocalyptic-themed villanelle is about the downfall of mankind.

The heavens watching from far above

saw us struggle on the land below,

as we fought for our lives and those we love.

The stakes were high within the grove

where scientists played, though they did know

the heavens watched from far above

Chaining viral vectors, hand in glove

that soon escaped, though we were slow

to fight for our lives and those we love.

The end came swift, and our thoughts were of

the way events had ebbed and flowed,

the heavens watching from far above.

And mankind’s tale a story wove

from brilliant thought to disaster sown,

as we fought for our lives, and those we love

Amidst decay and dismayed sobs,

our species fallen from a self-dealt blow,

as mankind in arrogance and ignorance strove

to survive, despite its own overthrow,

the heavens watching from far above,

as we fought for our lives, and those we love.
